Mexico City, May 7, 2009

As we promised in our previous official notice, we are sending recent information with respect to the development of the influenza A(H1N1) virus. This information confirms statements coming from both national health authorities and the World Health Organization, "not recommending travel restrictions related to the outbreak of the influenza A(H1N1) virus." (WHO: Influenza A(H1N1)). The situation is certainly under control, so we have returned to routine activities although we are still under alert. We want to share with you a comparison between the actual situation and the hypothetical projection modeled by taking the index from real basic reproduction of 1.4 (the one of the seasonal influenza is 1.3), if one assumes that no measures would have been taken by the government. See for instance: "Population biology of infectious diseases: Part I" Nature 280 (5721): 367 - 7; "Transmissibility of 1918 pandemic influenza" Nature 432 (7019): 904-6.

As you can see, we have reasons to be optimistic and therefore to continue with the organization of the IPhO2009. We are convinced that it will take place without misfortunes. Also, we want to let you know that we are asking Mexico's Health Authorities to provide us an official document confirming this information. As soon as we receive it we will forward you a copy. Please be sure that we will take any measure during the event to provide strict sanitary conditions. We will keep you informed on the evolution of this situation.

In relation to the recent news regarding the outbreak of swine flu in Mexico, at this time, there has been no reported cases in the City of Merida, where the IPhO 2009 will be held. Based on the information that we have received from Mexican health officials, we feel certain that this situation will be contained and resolved very soon. We are optimistic that the Olympiad will take place as planned and without any delay. The IPhO 2009 Organizing Committee will keep Delegations informed regarding future developments.
